6-year-old Student in Custody After Shooting Teacher at Richneck Elementary School: Police Chief

Officials report that a 6-year-old male pupil is in custody and a female teacher in her 30s is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting in the classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News on Friday afternoon.

During a press conference at 5:30 p.m., police chief Steve Drew confirmed that a 6-year-old first-grade pupil had been identified as the shooting suspect. The shooting, according to the chief, was not an accident. According to authorities, no pupils were hurt in the incident, which occurred at about 2 p.m., although tactical teams were rushed into the building.

Newport News, Virginia, is a city of roughly 185,000 inhabitants in southern Virginia noted for its shipyard, which produces aircraft carriers and other US Navy vessels.
