A Report from the Virginia State Police on the Investigation into the Uva Shooting

According to a press release issued by the Virginia State Police (VSP), the investigation into the shooting at the University of Virginia (UVA) will now be handled by the VSP. According to the VSP, the University Police Department and UVA sought the modification so they could have additional resources and individuals assisting the investigation. The probe has stretched out to several jurisdictions.

On November 16, 2022, Christopher D. Jones Jr., 22, of Petersburg, Virginia, made his initial court appearance on three felony counts of second-degree murder, two felony counts of malicious wounding, and five felony counts of using a handgun to commit a crime. Jones is being held without bond at the regional jail for Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

In a news statement, the VSP provided numerous developments from the investigation. According to the investigation, Jones had gone to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022, along with other UVA students to see a play at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

The students and a professor had dinner in the District after the play. In a specially arranged bus, the professor and 22 students made their way back to Charlottesville; they reached UVA that same day at 10:15 p.m. The chartered bus stopped at Culbreth Garage on The Grounds, according to the VSP.

Jones allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting as the students stood up to leave the bus. Jones is accused of firing further shots as he got off the bus before running away from the area on foot. Jones drove away from the scene in a black Dodge Durango.

The University of Virginia Police, the Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney, the Albemarle County Police, the Charlottesville Police, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, the Office of the Virginia Attorney General, the ATF, and the FBI are all cooperating in the investigation at this time.
