TMZ said on Tuesday that Pujols had filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable issues,” and that the pair had been separated since February. MLB star Albert Pujols allegedly asked for shared custody of his three minor children with ex-wife Deidre. The couple has five children together.

In a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano, Pujols stated, “I’ve been asked a lot of questions over the past several days regarding what’s been going on at home and tragically, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the choice to file for divorce from my wife, Deidre.”

With Opening Day coming up and other recent family events, I know this isn’t the best time to bring things up. Getting into one of these predicaments is seldom simple and doesn’t happen overnight.

In the offseason, Pujols re-signed with the Cardinals. He was a local favorite in St. Louis from 2001 through 2011. He subsequently played with the Angels for more than a decade before finishing his career with the Dodgers.

Devout Christian that I am, this is a conclusion I never wanted to see,” Pujols concluded in his statement. I prayed to the Lord for direction for many, many hours.

Pujols stated that he and Deidre “remain committed” to providing “a caring and safe home” for their five children.

In his letter, he expressed his gratitude for his family’s five children and his determination to provide a nurturing home for them. “At this time, I would appreciate it if you could respect our privacy and the privacy of our five children.
