Alvin Bragg Receives Death Threat With Powder After Trump Warns of Probe-related Violence

After warning on Friday of “possible death & destruction” if he is indicted by a grand jury in a criminal investigation conducted by Alvin Bragg, former President Donald Trump threatened Bragg with assassination in a letter containing powder. According to a typewritten note in an envelope addressed to Bragg that said, “ALVIN: I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!,” WNBC reported, citing law enforcement sources.

The letter, which had a postmark dated Tuesday from Orlando, Florida, was discovered in the district attorney’s mail room in a building in lower Manhattan on Friday after being received at 11:40 a.m. EST. The New York Police Department informed CNBC that it had been determined that the white powder in the envelope was not harmful.

According to a DA spokeswoman, the incident was quickly contained and there was no toxic chemical, as determined by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and the NYPD Emergency Service Unit. Investigators from the NYPD and the FBI, which has a local office, were on the scene looking into the letter.

A senior New York law enforcement official told WNBC that the threat against Bragg is just one of the hundreds that have been made in recent weeks as the DA’s office draws closer to the conclusion of its probe into Trump. According to the official, a number of those threats—despite having varying degrees of credibility—were assessed to significantly pose a threat of direct harm to Bragg.

The law enforcement officials noted that security officials are actively monitoring the threats and looking into them. Before the 2016 presidential election, Michael Cohen, Trump’s then-attorney and fixer, gave porn star Stormy Daniels a hush money payment. This is the subject of an investigation by Bragg.

According to a source who received the email, Bragg said, “I realize it hasn’t been easy” with the “press attention and security around our office,” in an email sent to the whole workforce on Friday afternoon, NBC News reported. The personnel was also commended for their “strength and professionalism at this time,” according to Bragg.

He wrote, “We will continue to apply the law fairly and equally. In the Trump investigation, a grand jury has been hearing testimony, but it was off on Friday. Trump stated over the weekend that he would be detained on Tuesday as part of Bragg’s inquiry, but nothing of the sort transpired.

Trump attacked Bragg in a social media post on Thursday, branding him a “Soros-backed beast.” At one in the morning on Friday, Trump denounced the probe and threatened violence if Bragg was indicted, calling him “a degenerate maniac that truly hates America.”
