Amazon Orders Marvel-Sony Shows, Starting With ‘silk: Spider Society’ Kang

Variety has learned that Amazon is formally going forward with a number of live-action projects based on the Marvel characters owned by Sony. “Silk: Spider Society,” created by “The Walking Dead” showrunner Angela Kang and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, will be the first series to air as part of the agreement.

As part of a new multi-year overall television deal she has signed with Amazon, Kang will serve as showrunner and executive producer on “Silk.” Along with former Sony CEO Amy Pascal, executive producers include Kang, Lord, and Miller. The studio is Sony Pictures Television, where Lord and Miller now have a general contractor.

According to Quentin Tarantino, a TV series with eight episodes will be produced. The local premiere of “Silk: Spider Society” will take place on MGM+ (formerly Epixlinear )’s channel next year, followed by a global release on Prime Video.

The characters featured in the program were developed by Humberto Ramos and Dan Slott for Marvel Comics. A Korean-American woman who was bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, Cindy Moon, is followed as she escapes prison and looks for her lost family in order to become the superhero known as Silk.

According to Jennifer Salke, CEO of Amazon Studios, “Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reworking of the Spider-Man property has represented some of the most vibrant superhero storytelling in film.” “We couldn’t be happier to introduce ‘Silk: Spider Society’ to our MGM+ and Prime Video viewers, working with Angela Kang’s creative vision.”

Back in September 2020, it was said that the “Silk” series and other programs based on Marvel characters owned by Sony were in the works. In 2021, it was reported that Tom Spezialy had joined the series as a showrunner as part of his own Amazon overall deal. At the time, Lauren Moon was penning “Silk.”

Lord and Miller continued, “Angela is a pro’s pro whose viewpoint and ingenuity we deeply respect and like. Additionally, she is a tonne of fun. She adores these characters, and we are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with her to share Cindy Moon’s story with the world.

For her work on “The Walking Dead,” Kang is most recognized. In 2011 she joined the show as a writer, and in 2013 she was named co-executive producer. In 2018, she received a promotion to executive producer and showrunner, effective with the ninth season of the popular AMC series.

On Nov. 20, “The Walking Dead” will air its series finale, and Kang is also collaborating on a spinoff starring Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon. In 2020, she established her own production business, Kang & Co Entertainment.

The organization’s executive vice president of development is Jason Sax, a former consultant producer for “The Walking Dead.” The sci-fi novel “The Postmortal” by Drew Magary and a series adaptation of the book “Black Sun” by Rebecca Roanhorse are two of the projects now in production at Kang & Co.

Although Sony presently possesses over 900 such characters connected with the Spider-Man franchise, it is currently uncertain which additional Marvel characters will appear in the Amazon programs. Sony has previously published a number of live-action Spider-Man movies, and it is presently collaborating with Marvel Studios on the rebooted film series starring Tom Holland through Columbia Pictures.

The 2019 Academy Award-winning animated picture “Into the Spider-Verse,” which was produced by Sony, also received this honor. The first of two planned sequels to that movie, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” will hit theatres in June 2023.

Sony has also released the live-action movies “Morbius” with Jared Leto and “Venom” and its sequel “Let There Be Carnage” with Tom Hardy. The production of a third “Venom” movie is currently underway, and Sony is also working on movies based on several other characters, including “Madame Web,” starring Dakota Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and “Kraven the Hunter.”
