Baldwin Wraps 'Rust' Filming After Fatal Shooting

Nearly 18 months after Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was fatally shot on the set of “Rust,” Alec Baldwin has finally finished filming. Baldwin, 65, revealed in a selfie he posted on Instagram on Tuesday that he had removed the facial hair on his character in the Western movie. He captioned the photo, “God, it felt good to shave off that beard.”

The actor also published an Instagram Story in which he and his on-set son Lucas, who Patrick Scott McDermott portrays, embrace. Alec’s final day. “I’ll miss you,” wrote McDermott. Baldwin returned to the “Rust” set in Montana during the legal upheaval in April. In a proposed settlement to a wrongful death case, widower Matthew Hutchins stated last year that plans to resume filming would make him an executive producer on a revived “Rust.”

‘Rust’ production continued amid legal setbacks.

In April, Baldwin’s criminal charges were withdrawn in connection with the fatal prop gun shooting of Hutchins on the “Rust” set. Ted Spaulding, the founder of Atlanta-based Spaulding Injury Law, claimed that the movie’s production would have gone through whether or not Baldwin’s charges were dismissed. He said I don’t think this would affect “Rust’s” ability to continue filming.

The “Rust” production moved forward quickly before these accusations were dropped. During a Western movie practice in October 2021, Baldwin aimed a gun at Hutchins when the gun went off, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin, a movie producer, insisted that he did not pull the trigger and that the weapon was accidentally shot.

According to a forensic analysis by the FBI, the trigger had to be removed for the firearm to fire. Before dropping the accusations against the actor last month, New Mexico authorities were pursuing involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the movie’s weapons supervisor. Both made a not-guilty plea.

The prosecution withdrew Baldwin’s charges in April.

The criminal case against Baldwin was dismissed without prejudice by prosecutors in a nolle prosequi submitted on April 21. They noted that “new facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis which cannot be completed” before the preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors stated that the inquiry is still “active and ongoing” in this case. In a statement on April 20, special prosecutors Kari T. Morrissey and Jason J. Lewis provided more details about their choice, stating that it “does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled.”
