In Cambridge, Ben’s family had a long history of involvement in the arts. Ben and his brother grew up going to the theatre and hanging out with other artists. Both of the Affleck boys had auditions set up by his mother’s friendship with a local casting agent. However, despite her encouragement, Ben’s mother did not press her son into becoming an actor; she wanted him to be a teacher.

Eight-year-old Ben Affleck met Matt Damon, a boy his age. The boys instantly clicked and became lifelong pals after that first meeting. They met while taking acting classes and would go on to work together in Hollywood.

Early Career

When he was seven years old, Ben Affleck landed his first professional acting role in a small independent film. Ben worked in Cambridge and Mexico from the ages of 8 to 15 in the PBS children’s shows “Voyage of the Mimi” and “Second Voyage of the Mimi.” Afterward, at the ages of 14 and 15, he appeared in the ABC after-school special “Wanted: A Perfect Man” and the television film “Hands of a Stranger.”

Daddy (1991), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), and School Ties (1993) were just a few of Ben’s small-screen appearances after he graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 1990. (1992). He was frequently cast as a bully or a jock because of his large size. “Body to Die For: The Aaron Henry Story” and “Against the Grain” both featured him as a football player. Ben then landed a role in the now-iconic Richard Linklater film “Dazed and Confused,” in which he played a high school bully. He also appeared in the 1995 film “School Ties” as a supporting actor.

“Good Will Hunting”

“Good Will Hunting,” which Affleck co-wrote and starred in with close friend Matt Damon, was the film that launched Affleck’s career. The screenplay was originally a 40-page assignment for Damon’s Harvard University playwriting class; the two later worked together in Los Angeles to expand it into a feature film script. These two wanted to work on a project where they could take on more of a leadership role after becoming dissatisfied with supporting and background roles.

The finished script was given to Affleck and Damon’s agent, who distributed it to several studios. However, Castle Rock refused to give Ben and Matt the creative control they desired in 1994. Filmmakers were given more leeway at Miramax, where the men took the screenplay.

Both the screenplay and the acting in the 1997 film “Good Will Hunting” were widely praised. Due to their outstanding performances in the film, Affleck and Damon became overnight superstars and were soon cast in larger roles.

Collaboration with Matt Damon

Ben and Matt, who have been friends since kindergarten, have been working together to make their dreams of becoming actors a reality. As newcomers to the industry, they kept all of their acting paychecks in a single joint bank account. To get to auditions, they spent the money on train or plane tickets.

Pearl Street Films was established in 1998 by the two co-founders. They’d go on to found another production company, LivePlanet, in the future. “Project Greenlight” was LivePlanet’s most notable achievement. Young filmmakers were allowed to direct their first feature-length film as part of the series.
