After four years, CBS granted him a journalistic fellowship to pursue a degree in political science at Columbia. It was to Barbara Barnes Orteig that Plante first wed.

They split up, and he married Robin Smith the next year (1987). Before his death, they had been married for 34 years. Patrick, one of his kids, died in 2014 before him.
