In 1979, Woodruff obtained his diploma from the exclusive Cranbrook Kingswood school located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In 1983, he received his B.A. from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. He played lacrosse there and finished second all-time at Colgate with 184 points.
