California Declares State of Emergency as Monkeypox Spreads

Monkeypox is quickly spreading, so California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Monday. This is the third U.S. state to do so in just a few days.

Newsom said that the emergency declaration would help the state’s efforts to get people vaccinated. As the number of infections goes up, there aren’t enough vaccines to go around. Staff at sexual health clinics and other places have had a hard time keeping up with all the people who want the shots.

California is calling on its Emergency Medical Services to help with giving out the vaccines. Newsom said that the state is trying to stop the spread at all levels of government by testing, tracking down contracts, and reaching out to the public.

Illinois had already called a public health emergency on Monday, so California followed suit. In response to the outbreak, New York called a state disaster emergency late Friday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that there have been nearly 6,000 cases of monkeypox in 48 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Since May, when health officials in Boston found the first case in the U.S., the outbreak has spread quickly.

47 per cent of all confirmed cases of monkeypox in the U.S. have been found in California, Illinois, and New York, which are home to the three largest cities in the country. As of Monday, almost 1,400 confirmed cases were in New York, making it the centre of the outbreak in the United States.

Monkeypox rarely kills, and so far there have been no deaths in the U.S. But for some people, the rash caused by the virus is very painful. Scientists and people in charge of public health are worried that monkeypox could stay in the U.S. if the current outbreak isn’t stopped.

Last month, the WHO said that monkeypox was a global health emergency. WHO data show that there have been more than 19,000 cases of monkeypox in at least 78 countries. The virus is spreading quickly across North America and Europe, which is unusual. Monkeypox used to spread slowly in West and Central Africa, where the virus is carried by rodents and other animals.

The main way monkeypox spreads is through skin-to-skin contact during sex. Public health officials say that gay and bisexual men are the most likely to get sick right now. The CDC says that about 98 per cent of patients who gave demographic information to clinics said they were men who have sex with other men.

But health officials have said over and over that the only way to get monkeypox is to touch someone with the rash that comes with the disease or something that is contaminated, like towels or bedsheets. Last month, the CDC confirmed the first two cases of children in the U.S. getting the virus, which likely spread through their families.

The CDC says that a person with lesions in their mouth can also spread monkeypox through respiratory droplets, but this takes a long time and a lot of face-to-face contacts. Health officials say that the main way the disease is spread is through physical contact.

U.s. Weighing Public Health Emergency

Senior federal health officials say that the Biden administration is considering whether or not to call a public health emergency in the U.S. This would help state health officials who are fighting the outbreak get the help they need. In response to Covid-19 in January 2020, the U.S. last declared a public health emergency.

Lawmakers in Congress and people in local communities have criticised the federal government’s slow response, but Health Secretary Xavier Becerra said last week that the Biden administration has done everything it can to get more resources to fight the outbreak. Becerra said that states need to do more to stop the spread of the disease and that Congress needs to approve money to help fight the outbreak.

Since May, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has sent more than 330,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine to state health departments. On Friday, the HHS sent another 786,000 doses to states and other places. But some clinics that give out the shots say they still don’t have enough to meet the demand right now.

In 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Jynneos, a two-dose vaccine for people who are at a high risk of getting monkeypox or smallpox. The only vaccine for monkeypox that is approved by the FDA in the U.S. is Jynneos, which is made by the Danish biotech company Bavarian Nordic.

The CDC says that after bringing on several commercial labs last month, the U.S. is now able to do 80,000 tests every week. But the number of confirmed infections in the U.S. is probably lower than it should be because people can’t get tested until they get a rash, which can sometimes take weeks. Clinicians take a sample of the rash by swabbing it.

In the strategic national stockpile, the U.S. also has 1.7 million courses of the antiviral drug tecovirimat. Doctors can use tecovirimat to treat monkeypox, but because the drug is only approved for smallpox, this adds another layer of red tape. Last month, the CDC cut down on paperwork to make it easier for doctors to write prescriptions for tecovirimat.

Monkeypox is caused by a virus in the same family as smallpox, but it is much less dangerous.
