A boy fighting for his life in the hospital after his car collided with a pole and caught fire had only lately lost his father in sad circumstances. Tyson Brehm, 15, is one of three teens being treated in hospital after the reportedly stolen Mazda CX-9 he was driving left the road at 6 a.m. on Tuesday in Brightview, west of Brisbane.

Cassie Battisson, 17, and a kid, 15, who is thought to be Cassie’s brother, were also critically injured in the incident. According to emergency services, the car was attempting to overtake a truck when it left the road, collided with a pole, and exploded into a flame.

Witnesses are said to have thrown or pulled the teenagers from the vehicle before it took fire. Tyson’s hospitalization follows his father’s suicide at the family home less than two years ago. A GoFundMe set up to pay for Tyson’s dad’s burial claimed he took his own life on New Year’s Eve in 2020, leaving his wife, six children, and two grandchildren behind.

‘The demise of our father/husband has affected us a lot, our family house won’t ever feel like home again. ‘Because of what has happened, my younger sister refuses to return home,’ Tyson’s sister Hayley said on the campaign.

‘Dad’s death is gonna (sic) have a tremendous influence on our lives, has devastated all our hearts.’ Hayley said her mum and dad had been together for 23 years and the widow now faced raising her six kids alone. ‘He was cherished by his grandchildren and would frequently watch them so we could go shopping… (this) has devastated all of our hearts,’ she said.

Tyson was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital alongside the other 15-year-old kid after the crash, while Ms. Battisson was flown by Lifeflight helicopter to Princess Alexandra Hospital. Cassie Battisson (pictured) was flown to the hospital by Lifeflight helicopter and is said to be in stable condition.

The Mazda CX-9 (shown) crashed after leaving the road in Brightview, Lockyer Valley. The three teenagers are being treated for injuries to their heads, limbs, and abdomen. Ms. Battisson was in serious condition but is now believed to be stable.

Angeline Martin, an off-duty nurse who lives next door to the crash site, was among the first to arrive. She stated that the teenagers were awake but puzzled. ‘When I arrived, the car began to fire… (it) completely exploded into a large flame,’ she told The Courier-Mail.

‘If the farmers hadn’t been there, I believe one or two (children) would have perished. ‘The girl, I put her on my lap, and she was asking for her brother.’ Police said the Mazda CX-9 was reported stolen from Clayfield in Brisbane’s north on Monday night.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and police have appealed to anyone who might have information relating to the crash to contact them. Police are investigating the cause of the crash and have requested any information that may assist them.
