Colleen Mae Ballinger (born November 21, 1986) is a comedian, YouTuber, actress, singer, and writer from the United States.  She is best known for her Internet persona Miranda Sings, for which she has posted videos on YouTube, for which she has performed her one-woman comedy show on tour in theatres around the world, and for which she created and starred in a Netflix original series named Haters Back Off.

Ballinger invented the delightfully talentless, pompous, and eccentric persona to satirize the countless YouTube videos of people singing badly in the hopes of breaking into show business, but who appear to be clueless about their lack of talent.

Ballinger’s own YouTube channel, Colleen Vlogs, also includes comedy and lifestyle videos. Her YouTube channels have amassed over 5 billion total views. Miranda Sings has over 10 million subscribers on YouTube, while the character has over 13 million TikTok followers and 6 million Instagram followers. Ballinger was named a Teen Choice Award winner for “Web Star: Comedy” and a Streamy Award winner for Best Actress.  She was named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 Digital Stars, and she was ranked fifth on Forbes magazine’s 2017 list of top entertainment influencers.

Ballinger has appeared in theatre, television, recordings, and online series as an actress and vocalist. She starred in the web series Escape the Night (2018-2019), Dawn in the Broadway musical Waitress (2019), Miranda Sings on Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (2014) and has performed three times on The Tonight Show (2016-2017), among other talk shows. Ballinger has also written two best-selling books in Miranda’s voice, Selp-Helf (2015) and My Diarrhea (2015). Erik Stocklin, an actor, is her husband.

Ballinger was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, the daughter of sales manager Tim Ballinger and homemaker Gwen Ballinger.  During middle school, Ballinger was homeschooled, attended San Marcos High School, and graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 2008, where she specialized in vocal performance.  She has two elder brothers named Christopher and Trent, as well as a younger sister named Rachel.

From 2007 to 2009, Ballinger worked for Disney in California, teaching children a private voice, dancing, and piano classes, and performing at parties and cabarets. In 2009, she starred as Kelsi Nielsen in High School Musical at Claremont’s Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theatre.  Ballinger features on songwriter Tim Prottey-Jones’ 2010 album More With Every Line and Chris Passey’s 2011 album Self Taught, Still Learning.

In 2011, she played Lynda Bird Johnson in a staged reading of First Kids in New York.  and created the part of Circe in the Off-Broadway musical Odyssey – The Epic Musical by the American Theatre of Actors.  Ballinger appeared as nurse Royal in the web series Dr. Fubalous in 2012.

 She also spoke about how to utilize social media to market yourself as a performer at the Boston Children’s Theatre.  In 2013, she appeared in the web series The Flipside episode “Under the Bed.” She also appeared as Amara in Episode 9 of Season 2 of Hipsterhood. She appears as Meg in the live-action version of the show’s introduction on the Volume 12 DVD of Family Guy.  She was also featured in the MTV True Life episode “I’m Famous Online” in 2013.  She starred in the online series MyMusic’s episode “Wedding Plans!” in 2014.

Later that year, both as herself and as Miranda Sings, Ballinger participated in a six-episode beauty series parody called How to Makeup on Collective Digital Studio’s I Love Makeup YouTube channel. “Colleen has beautifully found a method for guys to become engaged in a makeup demonstration… there’s a plot” in this show.  Ballinger was chosen by Re/code to represent “an emerging economy” of digital content suppliers. Flula Borg’s 2015 EP, I Want to Touch You, includes her on the track “Clouds.”

Ballinger was featured in a series of DiGiorno pizza advertisements in 2016. In 2018, she starred as The Disco Dancer in season 3 of the web series Escape the Night, in the animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet, and in Ariana Grande’s music video Thank U, Next.

 In season 4 of Escape the Night, she played The Duchess (2019).  She made her Broadway debut as Dawn in the musical Waitress, which ran from August to September 2019.  The musical’s box office grosses grew by $358,783 the week of its debut to $938,087, and they continued to rise the following week, reaching $963,408. Ballinger performed Janet in a live stream reading of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween 2020, alongside original cast members Tim Curry, Nell Campbell, and Barry Bostwick. Ballinger began portraying Crandy on the Netflix cartoon series Centaurworld in 2021.

Ballinger traveled to New York City in 2010 to pursue performance chances, but she returned to the West Coast in 2012 after realizing that she needed to engage with the Los Angeles YouTube community to optimize her YouTube audience. Ballinger and Joshua Evans married in California in July 2015, after dating for several years. Ballinger and Evans announced their divorce in separate YouTube videos in September 2016.

Ballinger afterward bought a new home in southern California. In 2016, she met actor Erik Stocklin when she cast him as Miranda’s love interest in Haters Back Off. They started dating in early 2018 and married later that year. The couple has three children: a boy named Flynn Timothy Stocklin who was born on December 10, 2018, and twin girls and boys named Maisy Joanne and Wesley Koy Stocklin who was born on November 6, 2021.
