David Byrne is a Scottish-born singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, writer, music theorist, visual artist, and filmmaker. He was a founding member, principal songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads.

Byrne was a British citizen until 2012, when he became a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and the United States, despite growing up in the United States. He is currently based in New York City. Byrne feels he has autistic spectrum disorder but has not been professionally diagnosed.  In a 2020 interview on Amy Schumer’s podcast 3 Girls, 1 Keith, he remarked that his disability is a superpower because it helps him to focus on his creative endeavors.

David Byrne’s Bio

Before starting high school, Byrne had already learned to play the guitar, accordion, and violin. His middle school choir rejected him because he was too withdrawn and off-key. Since a young age, he has had a deep interest in music.

His parents report that he began playing his phonograph when he was three years old and learned to play the harmonica when he was five. David’s father used his electrical engineering talents to modify a reel-to-reel tape recorder so that he could make multitrack recordings.

Byrne went to Lansdowne High School in the southwest corner of Baltimore County. He began his musical career as a member of the high school band Revelation, then as one half of the duo Bizadi with Marc Kehoe between 1971 and 1972.

Their repertoire included songs such as “April Showers,” “96 Tears,” “Dancing on the Ceiling,” and Frank Sinatra favorites. Before dropping out, Byrne attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

He returned to Providence in 1973 and co-founded Artistics with fellow RISD student Chris Frantz. The band disbanded in 1974. Byrne relocated to New York City in May of that year, followed by Frantz and his girlfriend Tina Weymouth in September.

After Byrne and Frantz could not find a bass player in New York for over two years, Weymouth learned to play the bass guitar. In late 1974, they were thinking about creating a band while working day jobs. By January 1975, they were practicing and playing together while still working regular day jobs. They founded Talking Heads and played their first gig in June.

Byrne resigned from his day job in May 1976, and the three-piece band signed with Sire Records in November. Byrne was the group’s newest member. Jerry Harrison, formerly of The Modern Lovers, became a multi-instrumentalist for the band in 1977.

With eight studio albums, the band gained critical and financial success. Four albums were certified gold (500,000 sales) and two others were double-platinum (2 million in sales). David Byrne worked on other projects during his tenure in the band, including a collaboration with Brian Eno on the album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, which gained critical acclaim for its early use of analog sampling and discovered noises.

Following the publication of this album, Byrne concentrated on Talking Heads. My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was re-released in early 2006 to mark its 25th anniversary, with new extra tracks. In line with the spirit of the original album, the stems for two of the songs’ component tracks were made available under Creative Commons licenses, and a remix contest website was established.

In 1981, Byrne worked with choreographer Twyla Tharp to score music from his album The Catherine Wheel into a ballet of the same name, which had odd rhythms and lyrics. The Catherine Wheel was performed on Broadway the next year.

David Byrne launched the global music record label Luaka Bop in 1990. It began with Latin American compilations but has now extended to include music from Cuba, Africa, the Far East, and beyond, with musicians such as Cornershop, Os Mutantes, Los De Abajo, Jim White, Zap Mama, Tom Zé, Los Amigos Invisibles, and King Changó.
