DC Police Investigating Navy Yard Shooting Amid Rise in Crime Across the Nation's Capital

Fox News has confirmed that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, District of Columbia is looking into a shooting that occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Navy Yard neighborhood. The Metropolitan Police Department told Fox News in a statement that the incident “took place at approximately 2:51 pm [Saturday] in the unit block of I Street, SE.” The statement was sent to Fox News.

According to the statement released by the MPD, upon officers’ arrival at the location, they discovered shell casings but no victim. “Shortly after that, an adult male victim walked into a local hospital complaining of a gunshot wound that was not immediately life-threatening. The victim was conscious and breathing when he arrived. Investigation into this matter is still ongoing at this time.”

Photos taken by individuals located close to the scene of the incident and uploaded to social media reveal that there is a police presence in the area and that some routes are blocked off to the general public. Another shot that was uploaded to social media shows yellow caution tape laid out in the middle of the road at the location of the accident. A user of social media who was nearby the crime scene reported that he could hear “the bullets from inside the building” when he was there.

After making the statement that the shooting at the Navy Yard will cause Republicans to call for “gun control” measures, Sarah Iddrissu, director of staff for Democratic Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York, was met with backlash on Twitter.

Address claimed that all the Republicans in Navy Yard were about to come to the conclusion that we needed gun regulation. The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence asserts that the District of Columbia possesses “some of the strongest gun violence prevention legislation in the nation.”

Gifford’s also mentioned that the city of the capital “requires the registration of all firearms and has rigorous standards for the types of firearms that can be owned or possessed.”  Gifford maintains on its website that firearms acquired in the District of Columbia are rarely utilized in criminal activity.

In 2017, the District of Columbia imported crime firearms at a pace that was more than 44 times higher than the rate at which it exported crime guns. Furthermore, the vast majority of guns that are discovered at crime scenes in the District of Columbia were initially purchased in another state.

This year, overall criminal activity in the nation’s capital is up by 2%. According to the numbers provided by the police, larceny, burglary, and arson have all decreased, however, thefts of vehicles and violent crimes have climbed. At least 200 people were murdered in the state of Washington in 2021, making it the year with the highest number of killings in several decades.

A fall crime campaign to address gun violence in the city’s most hazardous neighborhoods was announced by Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, District of Columbia, in the month of October. Several months ago, she approached the city council with a request for $11 million in order to hire 170 new police officers.
