Choctaw County Jail inmate Dies

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), a death at the Choctaw County Jail is being looked into.

On August 31, the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office asked the OSBI to look into the death of Charles Gilliland, 64, who was being held at the Choctaw County Jail.

On August 18, two other prisoners at the Choctaw County Jail beat up Gilliland. Gilliland was taken to Choctaw Memorial Hospital in Hugo, Oklahoma, and Med was taken to Oklahoma City Hospital after the attack.

Gilliland was taken care of and put back in the Choctaw County Jail after being treated. After Gilliland returned to prison, he was kept in a separate cell.

Officials say that Gilliland likely stopped breathing on August 31, 2022, because he had a medical emergency. Efforts were made to save his life, but they didn’t work.

Gilliland’s body was taken to the office of the chief medical examiner in Tulsa for an autopsy.

Gilliland was held for first-degree murder in the death of Kevin Roberson on January 22, 2022, in Boswell, Oklahoma.

When the OSBI is done with its investigation, it will send a full report to the prosecuting authority, which has jurisdiction over the suspect because he or she is a member of a tribe.

The OSBI said that the names of the prisoners involved would be made public if it is found that the attack on August 18 caused Gilliland’s death and charges are brought.
