After determining that they would be “better off as friends,” Hoda Kotb and Joel Schiffman broke off their engagement and ended their eight-year relationship. The 57-year-old Today anchor and the 63-year-old billionaire began dating in 2013 and were engaged in November 2019; they have two adopted girls together, Haley Joy, 4, and Hope Catherine, 2, and they have stated that they will do everything possible to co-parent their children.

“Over the holiday, Joel and I had a lot of spiritual and profound conversations, and we realized that we’re happier as friends and parents than as an engaged couple.” Kotb and Schiffman appear to have ended their relationship at the end of last year, stating that they didn’t want to start the new year as a couple.

“We decided to begin this New Year on a new road, as loving parents to our lovely, delightful children and as friends,” Hoda concluded. “It’s not like something terrible happened. They say that some relationships are designed to last for a reason, a season, or a lifetime, and I believe ours was only meant to last for a season.”

Honda went on to explain that she had nothing but good things to say about her now ex-fiancé, adding: “He’s a wonderful person. He’s a very nice and kind person, and I consider myself fortunate to have spent eight years with him. We’re both fine, we’re both on our way, and we’ll both be terrific parents to those lovely children.”

Following the revelation of her and Schiffman’s divorce, many fans and coworkers, including her friend and former co-star Kathie Lee Gifford, expressed their support for Kotb. “My beloved Hoda, I am honestly very proud of how you handled a very difficult and heartbreaking decision,” Gifford said on Instagram.
