The subway system in New York City is full of surprises, some of which are less pleasant, like the pizza-wielding rodent rat. Yet other times, Ed Sheeran surprises everyone by playing throughout the commute. The renowned subway singer Mike Yung was astonished to see Sheeran casually join him for a duet on the platform on Monday at the Church Avenue station in Brooklyn.
According to a video posted to Instagram by @subwaycreatures, Yung was singing Ed Sheeran’s brand-new single “Eyes Closed” while waiting for a train. Yung is most known for her memorable performance of Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” as a competitor on America’s Got Talent in 2017.
Then, Sheeran came up behind Yung and hugged him while saying, “I f—-ing love you, you’re fantastic.” In front of a small audience of followers, Yung told Sheeran, 32, who was harmonizing with him, “You’re the man.” After they were done, Sheeran offered Yung tickets to his performance that evening at Kings Theatre, and the singer gladly accepted the gift.
Later that evening, he uploaded pictures of his concert tickets and a video to his Instagram profile. The video’s commentary read, “NYC subway legend @mikeyung performed @teddysphotos new song ‘Eyes Closed’ and got a pretty great surprise in the process. Afterward, Sheeran uploaded the video to his own Instagram Story and added the message “Much love.”
The lead song off the next album (Subtract) by the celebrity, which is scheduled for release on May 5, is “Eyes Closed.” “Eyes Closed” was initially written as a break-up song many years ago. But Sheeran realized the song’s lyrics had a whole new significance after his friend and mentor Jamal Edwards passed away in February 2022.

According to Sheeran in a release, “This song is about losing someone, feeling like every time you go out and you just expect to run into them, and everything just reminds you of them and the things you did together.” To deal with the grief of loss, “you kind of have to remove yourself out of reality sometimes, but certain things just bring you right back into it.”
Sheeran’s sorrow is portrayed as a blue monster that pursues him on a night out in the song’s music video. On coming up with ideas for the “Eyes Closed” music video, Sheeran recalled wanting to create a clip that was “influenced by movies like Harvey, where the main character has an imaginary friend who is a big rabbit that no one can see.”
