The father of a young woman who passed away at age 25 from an undetected heart problem plans to row across the Atlantic Ocean to honor her memory.

Rutland native Andrew Osborne plans to walk almost 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) in a little over 90 days.

Following the 2018 death of his daughter Amy, he hopes to donate to a charity that assisted his family.

Mr. Osborne wants to donate £100,000 to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) so that those under the age of 30 can have free heart tests.

He plans to begin his journey across the Atlantic in December and has estimated that he would use 1.5 million oar strokes during his journey.

He estimated that the astronauts on the International Space Station may be his closest human contact for a portion of the journey. Mr. Osborne, age 57, has been working with Olympic gold medalist James Cracknell for months. “Since both Amy and I share a deep appreciation for water, I came up with the brilliant plan to sail across the Atlantic. But then someone said, “That’s more like a holiday than work,” so I went out and got myself a rowing machine. Mr. Osborne expressed how tragic it was for his family to lose their daughter.

“If the electrics in your heart suddenly quit working, don’t blame yourself for having a heart attack. “When it occurred to Amy, she was fast asleep, and we didn’t realize anything was wrong until the next morning when she didn’t get out of bed.

“As her family, we feel obligated to do everything we can to assist her. I do not doubt that Amy’s ghost will be waiting for me when I get there, and she’ll probably be the one to purchase my large lager.

Mr. Osborne plans to depart in December at optimal tide levels and land in Antigua at a bar in April.

Dr. Steven Cox, CRY’s CEO, has said: “Incredibly, Andrew Osborne has promised to do all this in honor of his late daughter Amy.
