On Wednesday, a Texas jury was asked to consider the death penalty for a woman accused of murdering a pregnant woman and kidnapping the lady’s unborn daughter. Taylor Parker was on trial for the October 2020 murder of Reagan Simmons-Hancock and the abduction of her unborn child when the appeal was filed during the punishment phase of the trial. In an earlier trial, a Bowie County jury convicted Parker of capital murder.
Prosecutor Kelley Crisp told the jury that Parker, 29, faked a pregnancy and repeatedly lied before killing Simmons-Hancock, 21, on October 9, 2020, at Simmons’s New Boston home. Parker said she killed Simmons-Hancock for the baby she claimed to be carrying. The newborn was also lost.
Parker’s defense team pleads with the jury to grant their client a life sentence without parole. Jeff Harrelson, who represents Parker, said the defense would prove his client’s mental illness.
An investigator for the state police testified throughout the trial that Parker had extensively studied how to effectively fake a pregnancy. CBS DFW stated that a Texas state trooper pulled Parker over 12 miles to the north-northwest of the murder site. According to the station, Baby Parker was reportedly rushed to an Idabel, Oklahoma hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
