Following a Break Due to Security Concerns, CBS News Has Resumed Posting on Twitter

After suspending activity on the Elon Musk-owned social media network for around 40 hours due to “security concerns,” CBS News has resumed tweeting. The news organization’s communications team tweeted on Sunday morning at 9:36 a.m. ET, “After stopping for much of the weekend to assess the security concerns, CBS News and Stations is resuming its engagement on Twitter as we continue to watch the situation.”

According to a statement made by CBS News on Friday, “CBS News is stopping its engagement on the social networking site as it continues to monitor Twitter due to the uncertainty surrounding the platform.” Despite the disruption caused by Musk, many sponsors have declared they are freezing their Twitter advertising budgets, but CBS News was the largest media organization to publicly announce its withdrawal from Twitter.

Given the departure of key employees in charge of managing Twitter, CBS News was particularly concerned about the security of the information there. The news organization has been closely monitoring the situation to determine whether Twitter is vulnerable to hacking assaults and if any of its crucial features fail.

Fears that the platform may begin to malfunction have increased due to the widespread personnel exodus from Twitter, which now has a headcount believed to be less than 2,500, down from 7,500 before Musk’s $44 billion takeover.

The richest man in the world, Musk, appears to have changed Twitter’s procedures and standards on his own. He said on Saturday that Donald Trump’s account had been reinstated, following a poll of his Twitter followers that revealed a narrow majority of respondents supported the former president’s return to the social media site.

Twitter banned Trump in January 2021 due to worries that his comments could incite more violence following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. In revoking the decision about Trump’s account, Musk wrote the Latin proverb “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” which translates to “the voice of the people is the voice of God.” Trump has asserted he won’t restart posting on Twitter because he prefers to stick with the much-smaller Truth Social app offered by his business.
