San Jose State’s next football game has been postponed following the fatal scooter accident of a freshman running back on Friday. Saturday’s game against New Mexico State has been postponed in the season so that the Spartans can grieve the loss of Camdan McWright, according to athletic director Jeff Konya.
“We are all devastated by Camdan McWright’s passing,” Konya added. There is a tight-knit community at San Jose State University, and the university has been hit hard. The CHP reports that 18-year-old McWright entered the crosswalk immediately in front of the San Jose Unified School District bus, which had the green light. According to the officials, McWright died at the location, which was located around two blocks from the campus.
The highway patrol said that no one was hurt aboard the bus and that the 14 teenagers were safely transferred to another bus that took them away from the area. Reports state that the bus driver, who was 36 at the time, stopped and stayed still. It is not suspected that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. McWright played running back for the St. Genevieve High School football team in Los Angeles, not far from his childhood home in Sylmar. This season, he has appeared in just one game. In a statement, coach Brent Brennan stated, “We lost a fantastic young guy tragically this morning.” Everyone who knew Camdan in this town could see that he was destined for great things. We are still processing the devastating news and are grateful for the outpouring of love and support.
In addition to making counselors available to students and faculty, the institution has stated that it is helping with the highway patrol’s inquiry. University President Steve Perez expressed his condolences to Camdan’s loved ones, as well as to his teammates and the whole Spartan family. “We grieve together, and we’ll provide Camdan’s family, our kids, and our football team all the assistance they need to get through this terrible time,” they said.
