“The most difficult task with power restoration would be in those places that experienced the brunt of the Category 4 plus, virtually Category 5 effect, where it may have uprooted parts of the existing infrastructure,” DeSantis said in an evening briefing. “Now, that will be fixed; it just won’t be fixed in 24 or 48 hours.”

More than 1.6 million households and businesses in Florida are still without electricity. Seven counties claim that between 60% and 100% of their utility customers are without power. The outages extend from Collier County, near the state’s southern edge, to St. Johns County, 350 miles to the northeast.

Ian is no longer a hurricane, according to the most recent National Hurricane Center update. The storm’s remnants continue to threaten Virginia with flooding rain, storm surge, severe winds, and isolated tornadoes from the Carolinas. According to The Associated Press, Hurricane Ian destroyed at least four piers on South Carolina’s northern shore. The Pawleys Island Pier was the first to go, followed by pieces missing from the Cherry Grove, Apache, and Second Avenue piers in Myrtle Beach.
