Unhappy sophomore Light Yagami in Tokyo discovers the “Death Note,” an odd black book that can murder anyone who knows their name and face. Light is not the first one to discover the “Death Note.” Light, first terrified of the Death Note’s divine power, muses on the Death Note’s potential and ends the lives of prominent Japanese criminals before going on to those of criminals all over the world. Light Five days after obtaining the Death Note, Ryuk, a “Shinigami,” approaches Light and asks for his help. To anybody who has not handled the notebook, Ryuk reveals that he threw the notebook into the human realm out of boredom and is captivated by Light’s activities, even if no one can see him.

The international press speculates that a single mastermind, called “Kira,” is responsible for the mysterious deaths of criminals all around the world. Interpol hires an intriguing consultant investigator known just as L to assist them in their efforts to arrest Kira. A decoy is murdered by L in order to trick Light into believing that he is in the Kanto region of Japan, which he deduced from Kira’s position. Light is outraged and vows to kill L, whom he believes is obstructing his path to victory. As Light deduces, Kira is privy to information on Light’s father, Soichiro Yagami, the Japanese police officer in charge of the investigation. Light


Three years later, Near, the current L, learns of the birth of a new Kira. Near concludes that the new Kira is desperate for attention and considers the new Kira as “uninteresting” and unworthy of capture after learning that the new Kira is killing persons at random. Shinigami-dubbed Midora approaches Ryuk with an apple from the human world, but Midora loses the bet when the human inserts his own identity into Death Note after hearing Near’s announcement. ‘No human can ever replace Light as the reincarnated Kira,’ Ryuk tells Midora.
