On August 3, an automobile tragedy killed Rep. Jackie Walorski and two staffers
The finding comes over a month after the Aug. 3 incident that killed Walorski, 58, and two of her colleagues, Potts and Thomson. Edith Schmucker, 56, died after Potts crossed the middle line and hit her car.
All four deaths were ruled natural. Elkhart County Coroner Merv Miller said Walorski died of “cervical spine dislocation”
Walorski, Potts, and Thomson were slain on Aug. 3 at about 12:30 p.m. Potts was St. Joseph County GOP chairman. Thomson oversaw Walorski’s communications. The group was returning from a ribbon-cutting in Claypool, Indiana. Schmucker was traveling south when she hit Potts.
The crash happened south of the Indiana 19/119 roundabout.
Witnesses told police Potts was driving behind a flat-bed truck and slowed to provide space before speeding to pass. Potts’ Toyota swerved into Schmucker’s Buick LeSabre as it approached the truck’s back.
“All data and information obtained are consistent with someone trying to pass on a two-lane road,” the report says.
Potts was driving 82 mph five seconds before the incident, then “coasted” at 77 mph in the moments before contact, according to the Toyota’s “black box” data.
This segment of Indiana 19 is 55 mph.
All four fatalities were judged unintentional and caused by crash-related injuries. The coroner merely noted Walorski’s dislocated neck. Miller said toxicological testing on the drivers was negative for anything that might affect motor abilities.
