Early Morning in Fort Worth
A light rain pouring on Friday morning, November 22, but a gathering of several thousand stood in the parking lot outside the Texas Hotel where the Kennedys had spent the night. The Killing of the President
Crowds waved at the Kennedys. The automobile left Main Street around 12:30 p.m. Gunfire rang out as it passed the Texas School Book Depository. President Kennedy bowed over after being shot in the neck and head. Governor was backshot.
The automobile quickly reached Parkland Memorial Hospital. The President was helpless. At 1:00 p.m., John F. Kennedy was proclaimed dead by a Catholic priest. Governor Connally would recover. Air Force One took the President’s body from Love Field to Washington. Judge Sarah Hughes administered the oath of office to a grim-faced Lyndon B. Johnson before the plane took off. The 2:38 ceremony was short.
Lee Harvey Oswald, a new Texas School Book Depository employee, was detained less than an hour earlier. He was accused of killing President Kennedy and Dallas police officer J. D. Tippit.

Funeral Services for the President
President Kennedy’s flag-draped casket was transported from the White House to the Capitol on a caisson hauled by six grey horses and one riderless black horse. At Mrs. Kennedy’s desire, the funeral was styled after Lincoln’s. Many sobbed as the caisson passed on Pennsylvania Avenue. During the 21 hours the President’s remains lay in state, 250,000 people visited.
Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on November 25, 1963. More than 100 world leaders attended the burial, and millions more watched TV. Mrs. Kennedy, Robert, and Edward Kennedy lit an eternal light at the gravesite.
