Despite having ties to northern and central Ohio, Jeffrey Dahmer was known as the Milwaukee Monster for the series of horrible killings he carried out there. The serial killer was raised in Bath Township, which is close to Akron, Ohio, and whose homicidal rampage is the subject of the new Netflix series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

He also murdered his first victim there in 1978. He first evaded police scrutiny before leaving Ohio. In 1991, when Dahmer was apprehended, it was found that he had slain and mutilated 17 men and boys. His residence included evidence that might indicate he consumed some of the victims’ body parts. He was given sixteen life sentences and killed by another prisoner at the Columbia Correctional Institution in 1994.

Jeffrey Dahmer attended elementary and high school close to Akron while growing up in Ohio. In 1966, the Dahmers made their first trip to Ohio and settled in Doylestown. They relocated to Bath Township in 1968. Dahmer graduated from Revere High School after attending Bath Elementary, Eastview Junior High, and Bath Elementary. A former student of his called him “the class clown, but not in a good way.”

Dave Borsvold of Cleveland Heights, who had known Dahmer since elementary school, said to The Enquirer in 1991 that Dahmer “was only amused by the unusual.” You’d never expect him to draw a knife on someone, but he would do odd things purely for the shock factor.

At his childhood home on West Bath Road, Dahmer murdered his first victim.  In 1978, Dahmer abducted and killed Steven M. Hicks, a young man of 18. Following a performance at Chippewa Lake, Hicks was hitchhiking on Route 224 when Dahmer picked him up and took him to his parent’s house on West Bath Road while pretending to be having a few beers. Dahmer murdered Hicks there and cut his body into pieces.

According to The Enquirer, the home’s previous owner discovered what was thought to be a piece of Hicks’ hip bone in 1990 while gardening the yard. The following year, more than 50 bone fragments were found on the premises by police.

Two police officers in Ohio’s Bath Township stopped Dahmer. Witness accounts claim that when Dahmer was spotted swerving on the road at around three in the morning, authorities suspected him of being a drunk driver. According to the Akron Beacon Journal, he performed “poorly” academically. As seen in “Monster,” some publications claim he dropped out, while others claim he was expelled from the university. His father Lionel stated that Dahmer had a 0.45 GPA and had failed the majority of his subjects in his 1994 book “A Father’s Story.”

After serving in the American Army, Dahmer went back to Ohio. After graduating from Ohio State, Dahmer’s father pushed him to serve in the American Army. He was stationed in Baumholder, West Germany, as a combat medic in 1979. Nevertheless, he was discharged with distinction in 1981 after it was determined that his drinking made him unfit for military service.

Jeffrey Dahmer: The structure where Dahmer carried out his horrific murders was demolished in 1992, and the vacant lot is still there today. He relocated to Miami, Florida, after receiving a debriefing in South Carolina. That same year, he moved back to Ohio to live with his father and stepmother Shari. According to his father’s book, he was detained shortly after for disorderly and intoxicated behavior.

There are rumors that David Dahmer, Dahmer’s brother, attended the University of Cincinnati. David Dahmer, Dahmer’s younger brother, has even more ties to Ohio, though it isn’t stated in “Monster.” After Joyce and Lionel’s divorce, David moved in with her and the boys. David was born in Ohio in 1966.

According to several publications, including Elle and the Cinemaholic, he is said to have graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1991 or 1994 and changed his identity following his brother’s incarceration. According to a background check done on Accurint, David L. Dahmer, who was born in 1966, resided in Corryville from 1989 to 1999.
