From 1946 through 1953, Jimmy served in the Navy, taking him and Rosalynn to Hawaii, Virginia, New York, California, and Connecticut. Jimmy’s naval career included time spent in the nuclear submarine program.

After serving as an officer aboard the USS Pomfret, he was advanced to the rank of lieutenant junior in 1949 after completing submarine officer school in 1948. During an accident with the NRX reactor in 1952, millions of liters of radioactive water flooded the basement of the reactor building at the Chalk River Laboratories of the Atomic Energy of Canada.

Carter was sent to Chalk River to shut down the reactor with a maintenance team under his command. Each participant had to wear protective gear to keep themselves from being exposed to radiation, making the process slow and laborious.

Carter has stated that his time spent at Chalk River influenced his views on nuclear energy as president and ultimately led to the decision to halt neutron bomb research. Once his father passed away in 1953, he decided to return to Georgia and his family.

For his service in the Navy, Carter was honored with numerous medals and decorations, including the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the China Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
