In Houston, Texas on March 5, 1963, he was given the name Joel Scott Osteen. John Osteen and Dolores Pilgrim have six children, and he is one of them. One of Osteen’s father’s previous wives also had a half-brother that Joel grew up with. Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was Joel’s college of choice, where he studied radio and television communications. Osteen did not graduate from high school.
Joel’s father, a Southern Baptist minister, left him the Lakewood Church and its television ministry. For 17 years, he produced his father’s TV sermons for Lakewood’s television program, which he founded. His father, John, died of a heart attack in January of that year. Joel took over his father’s ministry as a pastor and televangelist two weeks after his father’s death, despite his lack of formal religious training. It was in 2003 that Lakewood purchased the Compaq Center, which had previously been home to the Houston Rockets basketball team.
Over $105 million was spent on renovations that took 15 months to complete. Famous guests included Texas Governor Rick Perry and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who attended their grand opening. On Barbara Walters’s list of the 10 Most Fascinating People, Osteen appeared in 2006. As of 2008, more than 100 countries were watching the church’s weekly service on TV. President Obama invited Joel and his family to attend the White House Easter breakfast in 2010.
Since then, the Lakewood Church broadcast has grown tremendously and can now be seen in over 100 countries around the world. Joel has expanded both his church and his television ministry around the world. Every week, the church is visited by more than 50,000 people. Seven million people tune in each week to hear Osteen preach on television, and that number rises to 20 million each month. Although he lacks formal education, his father helped him develop his preaching abilities to a high degree. Osteen practices his sermons by first memorizing them and then listening to the recorded versions. When asked about his approach to teaching the Bible, Osteen said he strives to keep it simple and straightforward, emphasizing the importance of love and a positive outlook.
Sometimes God doesn’t remove the obstacle because He’s using the obstacle to develop us. He’s getting us prepared for where He’s taking us.

Joel’s first book, “Your Best Life Now,” was published in 2004. It debuted at the top of the New York Times Best Seller list as a positive-thinking book and remained there for 200 weeks. Joel’s “live at your full potential” message has been able to travel the world thanks to the success of this book and his sermons. With the publication of his second book, “Become A Better You,” in 2005, he earned an estimated $13 million in advances and royalties from its sales of 4 million copies. On a 15-city US tour in 2005, Osteen preached to large crowds at each stop, in support of his book. Osteen was once described by John McCain as his favorite honor. Throughout his career, Joel Osteen has penned 15 books.
Co-pastor Victoria off of the Lakewood Church and Osteen were married on April 4, 1987, in Los Angeles. Two children have been born to the couple. Additionally, both of Osteen’s older siblings and his younger sister are full-time ministers of their respective denominations as well.
On the other hand, Osteen has stated that the church can sometimes focus on a single issue to the point of neglecting other issues, such as gay marriage and abortion. As far as he is concerned, he opposes homophobia. Also, Osteen has stated that he is in favor of Israel. The band The American Dollar sued Osteen and Lakewood Church in 2011 for copyright infringement. Osteen won his case in court.
Hurricane Harvey Response
Osteen came under fire in August 2017 for failing to make Lakewood Church an emergency shelter after Hurricane Harvey. The former basketball arena is 606,000 square feet in size. First, the church stated that the building was unusable due to severe flooding, but Osteen disputed this by saying that the church had never closed. On the evening of August 28, Lakewood announced that they would be open as a shelter for victims and first responders starting at noon the following day.
When Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner recognized Osteen and Lakewood Church for their contributions to the city’s recovery efforts a year later, it became known as “Osteen Day.” More than 1,150 Houston families received assistance from Lakewood Church, which donated $1.1 million in rebuilding materials and housed 2,500 volunteers from their congregation, according to the mayor of Houston.
Personal Wealth and Salary
There are rumors that Joel Osteen makes more than $70 million a year from his book sales, radio show, public speaking fees, and church collection. It’s Joel’s opinion that people shouldn’t feel guilty about having a lot of material possessions. Instead, he holds the view that one should simply give thanks and praise God for all of one’s blessings in life. He claims to be paid by the church in no way.
Joel Osteen House
Detractors on social media love to point out that Joel Osteen and his family live in a 17,000-square-foot mansion in the Houston suburbs with his wife Victoria and their children. When the Osteens purchased the property in 2010, they reportedly paid $10.5 million. Estimated values for the property range from $14 million to $16 million.
They still own a house in Houston that is worth an estimated $3 million.
