Josephine Occhiuto gave birth to Behar on October 7, 1942, in the borough of Brooklyn, New York. She earned a Master of Arts in English education from Stony Brook University in 1966. She became an English teacher at a high school on Long Island after putting her knowledge to work in that capacity.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that the person who would become a celebrity ventured into the show business. At first, she worked as a secretary behind the scenes, then became a producer on Good Morning America.

In the Beginning: Joy Behar

Behar’s lone child was born in 1970 after she married professor and novelist Joseph Behar in 1965. The couple eventually separated in 1981.

In 2010, Behar revealed to Parade that she began performing stand-up comedy shortly after her divorce when her daughter Eve was 11 years old “I got fired from my day job when I was 39 and was already struggling financially due to my divorce.
