Gattis, who was born in Georgetown, Texas, on May 26, 1971, went to Nashville in his late teens and started a career in music. His self-titled debut studio album was released in 1996 after he signed with RCA Nashville. His only single to chart in the United States, “Little Drops of My Heart,” appeared on that track list and peaked at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. In Canada, the song “Real Deal” also made the charts.

Gattis led Dwight Yoakam’s band in the early 2000s and also put out another album, Big City Blues, on his own. He never found national success as an artist, but he was well-liked in the country scene and amassed a long list of writing credits for a variety of country performers.

He and Kenny Chesney collaborated on the song “When I See This Bar,” which Chesney released in 2013.
