Man Shot in Bellevue Area at Daylight in Chinatown

On Tuesday morning in Chinatown, a fight broke out near a playground and one man was shot in the chest, according to the police. Just before 9:30 a.m., two males and a woman were walking near Henry Street and Market Street when a fight broke out, according to police.

Police said that during the altercation, one of the two punched the woman in the face. About 20 yards from the Sophie Irene Loeb Playground, her buddy then drew a gun and shot the other of the two, striking him in the chest, according to authorities.

According to a witness, police apprehended the shooter and found the pistol. Police were already nearby, cleaning a homeless camp beneath the Manhattan Bridge, according to neighborhood security guard Sherman Walker, when a shooting broke out.

After the shot was fired, Walker claims he rushed outside to find the shooter being handcuffed by police. Before the EMTs arrived and took control, “a cop was applying pressure to the victim’s chest for about 10 minutes,” the witness claimed. What caused the violence is unknown. The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where his status was classified as stable.
