NBC has ordered a series of Mike O’Malley’s untitled comedy, which will star Jon Cryer. “After an amicable divorce, Jim and Julia decide to continue raising their children at the family home while taking turns on who gets to be with them.” When the owner of Jim’s favorite sports team enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart, navigating the waters of divorce and child-sharing becomes more complicated for Jim.”
Donald Faison from “Scrubs,” Abigail Spencer from “Suits,” Finn Sweeney, and Sofia Capanna also star. O’Malley (“Survivor’s Remorse”) will script and executive produce the film. EPs include Tom Werner, Wyc Grousbeck, Emilia Fazzalari, and George Geyer, as well as series star Cryer.
Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, a part of Universal Studio Group, are behind the project. NBC is expanding its comedy lineup. A multi-camera show from creator Mike O’Malley (Survivor’s Remorse, Snowpiercer) and actor and executive producer Jon Cryer has been ordered to series by the network. The untitled project, which is expected to premiere in the 2023-24 television season, is NBC’s second off-season pickup in recent months: The broadcaster ordered the missing-persons drama Found to series in July.
The drama, produced by Lionsgate TV and Universal TV, follows Jim (Cryer) and Julia (Abigail Spencer), who divorce amicably and opt to raise their children at the family home while taking turns staying with them. When the owner of Jim’s favorite sports team, Trey (Donald Faison), enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart, the waters of divorce and child-sharing become more complex for Jim. Sofia Capanna and Finn Sweeney also appear.
Cryer returns to multi-camera comedy after winning two Emmys for his work on CBS’ Two and a Half Men. He most recently appeared on The CW’s Supergirl as Lex Luthor. Alum of Mad Men and Timeless Spencer appears in Grey’s Anatomy on ABC. Faison (Scrubs) appeared as Professor Utonium in The CW’s canceled live-action Powerpuff Girls pilot and recurred on Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q in season two.
O’Malley, whose credits include Starz’s Heels and Survivor’s Remorse, as well as Showtime’s Shameless, will serve as showrunner. He collaborates on the project with two real-life sports owners, Tom Werner of the Boston Red Sox and Wyc Grousbeck of the Boston Celtics, as well as Cryer, Emilia Fazzalari, and George Geyer. The show joins NBC‘s comedy lineup, which includes returnees Young Rock, American Auto, and Grand Crew, as well as newcomers Lopez vs. Lopez and Night Court.
