Gummi worms have become one of the most popular candies in the world thanks to adults, not children. History of National Gummi Worm Day
In 1981, Trolli, the German confectionary candy company, launched National Gummi Worm Day on July 15, according to some accounts. Gummy bears had been the reigning gummi sweet since Hans Riegel started manufacturing candy in his house in Bonn in 1920.
HARIBO, Riegel’s company, made fruity gelatin dancing bears that were popular in European fairs and circuses, among other places. The bears quickly became a global sensation.
It was Trolli’s goal to produce a product that would appeal to children and their parents alike, so they came up with gummi worms. Some gummi historians believe Trolli released the gummi worms on July 15, the anniversary of the birth of the Bonn bears. Others, however, disagree.
A variety of other gelatin candy followed the bears, but nothing matched the bears until worm-shaped candies were introduced. As a result, Trolli decided to honour their accomplishments by hosting a celebration just for the worms.
Another non-bear kind of food was introduced by Trolli in 2004, and it was the roadkill. Gumi squirrels, chickens, and snakes with tyre tracks as evidence of their demise were generated by the group of scientists. Kraft Foods had already acquired the Trolli U.S. brand by that time, and they were forced to remove the product from sale the following year due to consumer backlash.
They are both sweet and sour today. They might have two distinct flavours or colours. With ice cream, vodka shots, and chocolate cake, they’ve become an essential part of desserts around the world. Between 2020 and 2024, the global gummi and jellied candy market are expected to grow to $40 billion.
