History of National Pet Fire Safety Day

Oddly, dogs (particularly Dalmatians) have become an American emblem linked with firefighters today, even though they are often the cause of devastating fires. A look at how that came about is in order. About a hundred years ago, dogs were used to guard passengers and horses in carts pulled by horses. Their strength, vigor, fortitude, and size quickly made Dalmations the ideal carriage dog.

As firefighters battled the flames, they had a reputation for getting along well with horses, and they were known to have a soothing effect. It wasn’t until motorized fire trucks replaced horse-drawn carriages that Dalmatians and other mascots of the firehouse became increasingly commonplace.

The Dalmatian is still a popular pet among firemen, and many firehouses still use Dalmatians as station dogs. In the firehouse, though, Dalmatians aren’t the only dogs. Firefighters (and even entire fire departments) have started adopting stray dogs they’ve found in the course of their duties. Regardless of breed, these lucky pups serve as a testament to the resilience, bravery, and fortitude of firemen and the people they assist.

They also play a vital role in spreading awareness of fire safety and disaster preparedness by working with local fire departments to hold demonstrations in local schools and community centers across the country. Educating the public on the fact that pets cause over 1,000 house fires in the United States each year and the preventative actions we can take to keep our pets safe.
