Nick Jonas on Performing With Kelsea Ballerini

During a disastrous performance with Kelsea Ballerini, Nick Jonas felt like a lost boy. The “Jealous” singer-songwriter spoke candidly about his “worst moment” on stage and how it prompted him to seek counseling during the Jonas Brothers’ latest interview on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast.

Nick remembered joining country diva Ballerini at the 2016 ACM Awards to play guitar and sing a duet of her famous song “Peter Pan” after reflecting on an incident during a Cole Porter homage in which he misplaced the words. “Then there was another time during a tragic guitar solo debacle on live TV,” recalled Nick, now 30.

I can laugh now that I look back at how enormous I thought it was. However, it did travel farther than I had anticipated, and it did push me into therapy. Three years had passed since the Jonas Brothers’ 2013 separation, and Nick was preparing to release Last Year Was Complicated, his second solo album. The First Time, Ballerini’s debut album, featured “Peter Pan” and was released a year earlier. She is currently 29 years old.

“This was one of the performances that Kelsea and I had together. I show up for my activity. I practiced it countless times. I’m not even really thinking about it like it’s something that’s going to be problematic, but rather pretty confident about it,” he recalled. “I started, it was fine,” Nick said, “but as I walked towards her, I just went completely blank, and I hit a wrong note and blacked out basically and clocked that it was wrong, and I couldn’t stop.”

The performer continued, “I can’t figure out what happened until this day and hours after unpacking it, but I was hustled to a car and rushed on an aircraft right after it. “I thought that was bad,” I remarked as I turned to face my manager. I was sort of in shock. It was a terrible experience that influenced the pressure I put on myself always to perform flawlessly.

He has since learned to put less strain on himself. However, he thought it was, at the time, his “worst moment.” Nick’s accident garnered attention after the concert, but Ballerini didn’t seem to mind. After the 2016 country awards presentation, she spoke about how the occasion realized a wish she had as a child.

She remarked at the time, “It was awesome.” I was delighted to perform “Peter Pan” at my first big kid award event. It’s my favorite song I’ve had the opportunity to release so far, and sharing it with Nick, who has been one of my famous musicians since I was around 12, was just incredible. As Ballerini opened for the Jonas Brothers on the Remember This Tour in 2021, the two have since had a chance to mend fences. They performed a duet of his 2016 song “Close” live.
