He was given the name Orlando Gibbons after the 16th-century English musician.  Samantha Bloom, his older sister, is nine years his senior.  Harry Bloom (1913-1981), a South African-born anti-apartheid novelist, was Bloom’s mother’s spouse and the man he had always assumed to be his biological father.

Harry Bloom died when Bloom was just four years old. But, when Bloom was thirteen, his mother told him that his biological father was actually their family friend and mother’s partner, Colin Stone. After Orlando’s father, Harry Bloom, passed away, Stone, the head of the Concorde International Language School, was named as Orlando’s legal guardian.
