In the last few years, Disney has made new versions of many of its old animated films. No matter how much people complain about these remakes, they still make a lot of money, so Disney will keep making them. Disney is making a new version of its 1940 animated classic Pinocchio, which is about a wooden puppet who turns into a real boy. Even though this story has been turned into movies many times, including two with Italian comedian Roberto Benigni, Disney’s version is directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckis and based on a script he wrote with About A Boy writer Chris Weitz.
If any of this sounds interesting, here’s a complete, easy-to-read guide that will answer all your questions about the new Pinocchio. It will tell you when it comes out, who’s in the cast, and how it’s different from another upcoming Pinocchio movie from Guillermo del Toro and Netflix.

When and Where Will Pinocchio Be Released?
After September 8, 2022, you will only be able to watch the new Pinocchio on Disney+. This day is important because it is the second Disney+ Day and will lead into the company’s D23 fan convention, which happens every two years. Keep in mind that Pinocchio is not the first live-action Disney remake that couldn’t be shown in theatres. Lady and the Tramp and Mulan also couldn’t be shown in theatres, though Mulan’s wasn’t because of COVID.
Who’s in the Cast of Pinocchio?
Many actors, like Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo, Luke Evans, Kyanne Lamaya, Giuseppe Battison, Lewin Lloyd, Sheila Atim, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key, and Lorraine Bracco, will be in this new Pinocchio movie, either in person or as the voice of a CG character.
Watch the Pinocchio Trailer
On May 31, 2022, Disney put out the first trailer for Pinocchio. This 102-second teaser doesn’t show much of the main character, but it does show other characters (both real people and CGI ones) and a bit of the new version of “When You Wish Upon a Star” from the movie.
Who’s Playing Who in Pinocchio?
Most of the characters in this new Pinocchio were in the original Pinocchio, but in case you haven’t seen it or just forgot, here are brief descriptions of all the characters in Disney’s Pinocchio remake.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth gives life to Pinocchio, a wooden puppet that wants to be a real boy and comes to life.
Geppetto, the lonely woodworker who makes Pinocchio and raises him as his son, is played by Tom Hanks. Hanks joined the project in 2018 when Paddington director Paul King was attached, but he left when King dropped out. But Hanks came back after Zemeckis was hired as the new director, probably because he and Hanks already work well together. This is the fourth time Zemeckis and Hanks have worked together. The first three were Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and The Polar Express.
Cynthia Erivo plays The Blue Fairy, a magical being who turns Pinocchio into a living puppet and plans to turn him back into a real boy if he is honest enough.
Luke Evans plays The Coachman, who lures little boys to his cursed Pleasure Island so he can turn them into donkeys and sell them on the black market. Evans plays a bad guy in this movie for the second time. The first time was in Beauty and the Beast, where he played Gaston.
Signor Stromboli, played by Giuseppe Battiston, is a sly puppeteer who kidnaps Pinocchio and makes him perform on stage so he can make money.
Lampwick is a human friend of Pinocchio who is always getting into trouble.
Jiminy Cricket is a humanoid cricket played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He is Pinocchio’s “conscience” because of how smart and moral he is.
Keegan-Michael Key voices “Honest John,” a red fox who looks like a person and works with a cat named “Gideon,” who doesn’t talk, to trick Pinocchio and make money along the way.
When was Pinocchio Filmed?
Principal photography for the Pinocchio remake began on March 17, 2021, and officially wrapped on April 22 of that same year.
