Ree Drummond, better known as the Pioneer Woman, has previously spoken up about her parent’s divorce, but In Touch magazine has learned the stunning complete tale of the split that sent shockwaves through their small Oklahoma city exclusively. Genre, Ree’s mother, divorced her husband of 33 years and later married the family’s pastor, Doug Schwert, who was the rector at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in their hometown of Bartlesville, OK, until 1995.
Genre and Doug began as friends. Genre, an active member of the church, would frequently encounter her future husband — who was then married to his wife of approximately 20 years, Janet — when she did volunteer work, according to numerous people who spoke exclusively to In Touch. “Gerre and Doug would go to various committees and meetings together,” a churchgoer recalled. “They’d wind up in the same location.” They were thrown together at various times.”
“It wasn’t right,” a former church member tells In Touch. “People were conversing.” Even after two decades, residents still speak of the tragedy in whispers. “It was a scandal,” adds the churchgoer. “Ree was crushed,” a local told In Touch. “She begged [her mother and father] to be together.” They didn’t because: According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Gerre filed for divorce in October 1996, a month after Ree married husband Ladd, stating that “irreconcilable incompatibility has formed between the parties.”
William, a well-known local doctor, disagreed with Gerre’s assessment: “The defendant wishes to continue to live in a loving and supportive marriage with the plaintiff.” But, eventually, William abandoned his opposition, and the couple separated in 1997.
Doug divorced as well. “His wife was very hurt by it,” a local claims. “Everyone felt bad for her.” Doug and Gerre married in 1999 and moved out of Oklahoma soon after. They are now 12 hours away from Ree, Ladd, and their four children, Alex, 20, Paige, 18, Bryce, 15, and Todd, 13.
