On Wednesday, a Professor at University of Arizona was shot and murdered on campus in Tucson, according to authorities. Chief Paula Balafas of the University of Arizona Police Department said at a press conference that university police received a call about 2 p.m. local time stating that a 46-year-old former student had entered the John W. Harshbarger Building. “The pupil was not authorised to be in that building,” uttered Balafas. The caller requested that police “escort the man out of the building.”
Balafas claimed that as police were arriving, they received word that a shooting had occurred inside the premises. It was also reported to the police that the suspect had made their getaway. About 120 miles west of the university, in Gila Bend, the man was apprehended by the Arizona Department of Public Safety at around 5 p.m., Balafas said. Unidentified police officers found the victim of the shooting and rushed them to the hospital, where they later died.
According to Balafas, a handgun was used in the incident and police are still looking into what led to the shooting. Even though Balafas suspected the two were connected in some way, he was unable to confirm their relationship. The number of gunshots was another detail the chief was unable to verify. Balafas described it as “a tremendously awful incident.” “Our deepest sympathies go out to the professor’s loved ones and colleagues.”
