Richard Jay Belzer was an American actor, stand-up comedian, and author. He was born on August 4, 1944, and passed away on February 19, 2023. He was best known for his role as BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch, whom he portrayed as a regular cast member on the NBC police drama series Homicide.

Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as in guest appearances on several other series.  He was also well known for his role as BPD Detective, and NYPD Detective/Sergeant, From 1993 until his retirement in 2016, he was the voice of the character for a total of 23 years.

On February 19, 2023, when Belzer was 78 years old, he passed away at his house in Beaulieu-sur-Mer as a result of complications caused by unidentified circulatory and respiratory illnesses.  His close friend and fellow novelist Bill Scheft claims that the last words said by Belzer were “Fuck you, motherfucker.”

After going through his first divorce, Belzer went to New York City, where he subsequently began performing stand-up comedy at venues such as Pips, The Improv, and Catch a Rising Star. He also moved in with vocalist Shelley Ackerman.

He was a member of the Channel One comedy troupe, which made fun of television and served as the inspiration for the cult classic film The Groove Tube, in which Belzer appeared as a co-star on the fictitious television show The Dealers.

Between the years 1975 and 1980, Belzer made a total of three guest appearances on Saturday Night Live, where he was known for his role as the audience warm-up comedian.
