After explosions shook central Kyiv, the Ukrainian military shot at drones. Residents scrambled for safety as an anti-aircraft rocket streaked into the early sky, followed by an explosion and orange flames.
The Report That a Russian Drone Attacked a Residential Building in Kyiv
The U.S. will hold Russia accountable for “war crimes,” the White House declared Monday, hours after Russia bombed Ukrainian towns with drones during rush hour, killing at least four people in Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy claimed fresh attacks happened Monday evening. “Right now, Russian drones are being shot down. Interfax Ukraine reported bombings in Fastiv, near Kyiv, and Odesa. In the second round of air attacks in a week, Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s infrastructure, as they did in the morning, as civilians went to work and school.”
Ukrainian military shot at drones after bombings rocked Kyiv on Monday. Residents scrambled for safety as an anti-aircraft rocket streaked into the early sky, followed by an explosion and orange flames. U.S. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the incident “continues to highlight (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s savagery.” She told of a $725 million military aid package announced for Ukraine last Friday, “We’ll stand with the Ukrainian people as long as it takes.”
… We’ll keep punishing Russia for war crimes.
A pregnant lady was among the four murdered in the residential building attack, Kyiv’s mayor said. Ukraine’s interior minister confirmed there were deaths in other locations but did not offer a total. Black smoke billowed from a Kyiv apartment complex as firefighters battled fires. “I’ve never felt so scared…” Vitalii Dushevskiy, 29, a food delivery courier in the building, called it murder.
Nazar, his roommate, reported the stairway was “gone” when they tried to escape. Elena Mazur, 52, was searching for her mother, who called to say she was buried. Mazur hopes her mother has been rescued and sent to the hospital.
Ukraine says Iran-made “suicide drones” carried out the strikes. The U.S., Britain, and France agreed that Iran selling Russia drones would violate a U.N. Security Council resolution approving the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement. Iran denies supplying Russia with drones; the Kremlin has not replied.
White House accuses Iran of lying about Russia using Iranian drones in Ukraine. The Iranian U.N. envoy restated the government’s Friday declaration that it supports the U.N. Charter and U.N. peace efforts in Ukraine. Several E.U. foreign ministers advocated for penalties on Iran over drone sales to Russia. Russia’s defense ministry claimed it used high-precision weaponry to assault Ukrainian military sites and energy infrastructure. Reuters observed drone parts with the inscription “For Belgorod,” referring to the Ukrainian shelling of a Russian border area.
Alla Voloshko, a 47-year-old lawyer, said it’s a Monday custom to wake Ukrainians with rockets. Ukraine’s military claimed it has destroyed 37 Russian assault drones since Sunday evening. Reuters couldn’t independently confirm that number. Sunday night, a drone strike damaged sunflower storage tanks at Every maritime terminal in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, officials reported.
Russia denies targeting people in its Feb. 24 “special military operation” in Ukraine, which included the largest acquisition of European land since World War II.

The RIA news service said the incident occurred during a routine training flight. According to the defense ministry, the pilots reported an engine fire on takeoff, and the plane’s fuel caught fire upon impact with the structure. Both pilots bailed safely.
The Russian Investigative Committee has announced that criminal proceedings have begun. Only a tiny strip of the Sea of Azov separates Yeysk, in southern Ukraine, from Russian-occupied territory.
Ukrainian national energy business Energoatom also reported that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility, Europe’s largest, had been cut off from the country’s electricity system due to Russian bombardment. The International Atomic Energy Agency (AEA) reported that it was quickly linked to a backup plan.
Russian soldiers occupy the facility, but Ukrainian employees continue to run it while being under constant shelling from the conflict. The nuclear fuel within the reactors must be kept cold to prevent a meltdown. Russian officials have always held Kyiv responsible for attacking the facility.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Moscow and Kyiv carried out one of the largest prisoner exchanges of the war, swapping a total of 218 prisoners, including 108 Ukrainian women. Read more: Damon Elena Together: The Vampire Diaries: Top 15 Damon & Elena Moments
