A Look at Scott Galloway’s Journey From Analyst to Author
In 1987, Galloway started as a Fixed Income Analyst with Morgan Stanley after receiving his UCLA degree. In 1992, he founded Prophet, a branding and marketing consultancy firm, and in 1997, he launched RedEnvelope, an online retailer that specialized in unique and personalized gifts.
Galloway launched the now-defunct activist hedge fund Firebrand Partners in 2005, which invested over $1 billion in American media and consumer industries. In addition, in 2005, he built the digital intelligence company L2 Inc., which Gartner acquired for $155 million in March 2017.
In 2019, Galloway founded Section 4, an online education company. He raised $30 million in 2021, bringing his Series A round financing total to $37 million. He qualified for the World Economic Forum’s “Global Leaders of Tomorrow” program in 1999.
He has served as a director at Gateway Computer, Eddie Bauer, The New York Times Company, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and Urban Outfitters. Most of his research focuses on the Big Four internet companies: Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet, which he refers to as “The Four” or “the Four Horsemen.”
In 2017, he published his first book, The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. In February 2020, Galloway launched The Prof G Show, a weekly podcast where he answers listeners’ questions about technology, finance, and business.
In August 2019, Galloway published a critical assessment of WeWork’s IPO file. The report questioned nepotism, the corporate structure, founder Adam Neumann’s proof of self-dealing, and the company’s lack of profitability.
In addition, it disparaged JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, the investment banks that provided funding for the launch, asserting that they could earn $122 million in fees by slinging excrement at ordinary people. If an equities analyst suggests this stock for a price greater than $10 billion, they are either dishonest, naive, or both.
On September 28, 2021, CNN announced that Galloway would host on their CNN+ streaming service; however, the platform was pulled offline shortly after it started.
