The family left Newark and lived in Germany and Texas before returning to Germany. Shaq’s basketball ability began to garner attention while he was still in high school. He led the Robert G. Cole High School team in San Antonio to the state championship in his senior year. At Louisiana State University, O’Neal won two SEC Player of the Year awards and was named to two All-American teams. In 1991, he received the NCAA men’s basketball player of the year award from Adolph Rupp.

NBA Superstar

The Orlando Magic selected Shaquille O’Neal’s first overall in the 1992 NBA Draft. It had not been accomplished since Michael Jordan’s rookie year that he was named Rookie of the Year and an All-Star starter. His second season with the Magic brought them to their first playoff series. They returned to the finals the following year but were defeated by the Houston Rockets.

While O’Neal was sidelined for much of the 1995-96 season because of injuries, the Orlando Magic still managed to finish the regular season with a winning record. O’Neal and the Magic were victorious in the first two rounds of the playoffs but lost to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in the finals.

He was a member of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic men’s basketball team. They went on to win gold at the Olympics. When O’Neal announced his plans to join the Los Angeles Lakers during the Olympic Games, tensions between his coach, teammates, and the local Orlando media grew to a boiling point. The Los Angeles Lakers offered O’Neal a seven-year, $121 million contract, which he turned down.

To bring two of the most legendary players in the game together, O’Neal and a young Kobe Bryant were traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, despite the promising start to his career with the Lakers, they were unable to win a championship. Until a change in leadership, O’Neal had to battle both injury and personnel turnover to succeed.

In the 1999-2000 season, the Lakers hired former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson, who put them on the path to becoming a dominant force for years to come. Jackson pushed O’Neal to improve his defensive skills, which resulted in O’Neal becoming a better defender. Shaquille and the Lakers won the NBA championship that year and would go on to win the title the next two years in a row.

In 2004, the Miami Heat traded for O’Neal. Shaq signed a $100 million contract with the team the following year. Even though he could have asked for more money, he stated that he was pursuing another championship. The Heat won their first championship the following year, beating the Dallas Mavericks to clinch O’Neal’s fourth championship with the team.

O’Neal’s days of signing long-term contracts with teams were numbered as of 2008. That season, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he failed to make the playoffs for the first time since his rookie year. He was traded at the end of his first season to free up money. He would play for other teams for a single season, including the Cleveland Cavaliers (alongside Lebron James) and the Boston Celtics, where he finished his career.
