The Breakup of Desus and Mero

The separation of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, the longtime comedy pair that transformed their hit podcast “Bodega Boys” into a comedy empire culminated in the late-night chat show “Desus & Mero,” which lasted for four seasons on Showtime, was one of the more startling pop cultural happenings of 2022. The actors abruptly announced last month that they would be abandoning not only their Showtime series but also their creative cooperation as a whole.

A Showtime spokeswoman told IndieWire at the time, “Showtime’s late-night discussion show ‘Desus & Mero’ will not return for a fifth season.” The series’ final episode aired on Thursday, June 23. Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will pursue independent artistic projects in the future.”

The ‘Everything Everywhere’ team of Daniels and Steven Yeun has signed a deal with Showtime for the A24 comedy pilot ‘Mason.’ Desus and Mero allegedly fell out over a feud over a longtime manager. Since then, fans have speculated whether the separation was the consequence of a feud between the two comedians. But that’s not how Desus and Mero see things. The Kid Mero stated in a new interview on Sirius XM’s “Basic!” program (via Variety) that the split was amicable and arranged far in advance.

”Over a year prior to the show’s conclusion, Desus and I discussed pursuing separate interests, and that talk reinforced us in signing general agreements that recognized our intent to work independently of one another,” Mero added. “We were pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals as early as June of last year.”

He also stated that there will be no hatred between the two in the future as they seek distinct chances. “The intention was to go our separate ways in a supportive manner,” he explained. “I’m not breaking up with my girlfriend over the phone.” It was a strategy on which we all agreed.”

Mero believes that the breakup was motivated primarily by a desire to terminate the relationship on a high note rather than allowing the bond to fade over time. Leslie Priscilla of Latinx Parenting aims to ‘decolonize’ punishment and ‘the way we normalize abuse on children in our culture.
