Who is Thomas F. Dalton?
Thomas Dalton was a free African American who was born in Massachusetts and died in Massachusetts in 1883. He was committed to bettering the lives of people of color throughout his life. With his wife, Lucy Lew Dalton, he was instrumental in establishing and ongoing operations of several local educational organizations in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
These organizations included the Massachusetts General Colored Association, the New England Anti-Slavery Society, the Boston Mutual Lyceum, and the Infant School Association. He also campaigned for the integration of schools, which was finally accomplished in 1855.
Lucy and Thomas Dalton were steadfast in their conviction that integrating Boston’s schools and providing better educational opportunities for children of color in the city was the most effective way “to eradicate the prejudice that exists towards the people of color.”
Years that were the end for Thomas F. Dalton
Lucy Lew Dalton suffered from the effects of old age and passed away on April 12, 1865, in Charlestown due to her illness. Her passing occurred in the house on South Russell Street, number 29, which she and Dalton had shared.
On August 30, 1883, Thomas Dalton passed away in their residence on 384 Bunker Hill Street, where he had been living up to his death. He divided his legacy equally among his three nieces, giving each one fifty thousand dollars from his estate (Catherine L. Dalton Henson, Mary E. Freeman Freeman, and Harriet P. Freeman Johnson.)
