The Latest Movie Scooby-Doo Reveals Velma Gay: The Cartoon Character

Velma Gay

The new movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” has clips that Velma Gay have gone viral on Twitter because they validate long-held beliefs among “Scooby” fans that Mystery Inc. member Scooby-Doo is smitten with costume designer Coco Diablo.

A tweet with the words “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY” has been liked more than 100,000 times. Fans and the people behind “Scooby-Doo” have known for a long time that Velma is gay. Even James Gunn, who scripted the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on the “Mystery Incorporated” series, have verified the character’s sexuality, but they were never able to make it public onscreen. Gunn “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the 2020 live-action movies, he tweeted. According to his original script from 2001, “Velma was explicitly gay.” However, the studio kept reducing the film until it was “ambiguous” (the version shot), “nothing” (the version released), and “finally having a boyfriend” (the sequel).

In an Instagram post during Pride Month in 2020, Cervone stated, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. The woman is homosexual. Since Velma knew the relationship with Shaggy was inappropriate for her but struggled to articulate why we expected her to act a little strange and out of character throughout their time together. The mermaid episode provides some clues as to the why, and if you watch the whole Marcie arc, the reasoning becomes as plain as it might have been 10 years ago. After the timeline reset, I believe Marcie and Velma are an item despite their attraction during the original timeframe. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”
