He married Walters in 1963 when she was an NBC reporter, and the couple had a 13-year marriage. She was the second of his three marriages, and after several miscarriages, they chose to adopt.

An extravagant ceremony did not result in a happy marriage, and the two were only married for a brief period. They divorced after two years, and Walters stated in her book, Audition: A Memoir, that their marriage was so brief that she would likely not recognize him if she walked into him.
