During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Josh Lucas discussed the possibility of a Sweet Home Alabama sequel starring Reese Witherspoon. Sweet Home Alabama, which was published 20 years ago, follows Witherspoon’s character Melanie Carmichael, a New York-based rising fashion designer who finds herself in a quandary following her engagement to longtime boyfriend and politician Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey).
As the film unfolds, Carmichael finds she can’t have the wedding since she is still legally married to her estranged husband and childhood sweetheart Jake Perry, played by Josh Lucas, who refused to sign the divorce papers she had sent years before. Carmichael is then obliged to return to her hometown in Alabama to settle the matter.
Since its initial release in 2002, the picture has grossed over $180 million worldwide. Lucas bragged about working with Witherspoon in the past at the Dec. 8 discussion, while promoting his recent production, Paramount Network’s Yellowstone. The 51-year-old explained why they never made a sequel despite the film’s success at the box office.
“Part of it is due to Reese’s hectic schedule.” When we were filming the film, I had this moment where I thought, ‘Wow, this woman is a really intelligent, powerful person.’ Not simply because she was a wonderful actress and comic – she was in her mid-20s at the time. I told the director and a few others, ‘Reese is going to lead a movie studio.’ ‘Really?’ they asked.
Lucas went on to say that if and when Witherspoon finds time in her hectic schedule to film another Sweet Home Alabama, he would gladly reprise his part as Jake Perry. He stated,
“If you look at what she’s doing and how she became a mogul, I genuinely believe she wants to, I hope — she wants to be a part of it.” It’s not simple for her to carve out that chunk of her life… So I’m hoping she can find time to accomplish it. I’ll be there the next day.”
Lucas’ comments come months after Witherspoon marked the film’s 20th anniversary by uploading a video compilation featuring scenes from the production. “Sweet Home Alabama came out 20 years ago and dramatically transformed my life.”
Incredible memories of working on this film with these incredible actors—of course, Josh, Patrick, Dakota, Melanie, Jean, Ethan, Mary Kay, Fred, and Candace! So many wonderful scenes, and my favorite line… “So I can kiss you whenever I want.” “Do you recall the first time you saw it?”
