For the Houston Dash, she was a player between 2014 and 2019. Watt has played for the United States at every level from the U-17 to the U-23. Early Life of Kealia Watt
Watt was reared in Draper, Utah by his parents, Ben and Cindy Ohai. Megan is her sister, a former member of the U.S. youth national soccer team and a 2007 NCAA champion with the University of Southern California. Because of her father’s ancestry, she has some Hawaiian ancestry. Kealia Beach on Kauai inspired her parents’ choice of name for their daughter.
Watt, a 2010 alumnus of Alta High School, played four years on the varsity soccer team. From 2006-2009, under her direction, the team won four consecutive state soccer championships. She was the 2010 NSCAA National High School Player of the Year in addition to being a three-time first-team All-American, three-time All-State pick, three-time 5A soccer MVP, and a two-time Gatorade state player of the year. The career of Kealia Watt
Watt played for the Tar Heels for four years, from 2010 to 2013. He was a starter all four years and won a national championship with the club in 2012. She scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the semi-final and the opening goal of the championship match in the very first minute of play, respectively, to earn the title of the tournament’s most outstanding offensive player.
After her first season with the Tar Heels, Watt was honoured as an ACC All-Rookie Team selection and First-Team All-ACC selection. She scored 14 goals to put her at the top of the squad’s scoring charts and started 22 of the 24 games the team played. When she was a sophomore, she played 20 games and started all of them. She has a total of six goals and six assists, three of which were game-winners. Ohai topped the Tar Heels in scoring (23) and goals (9) in her third season with the team (9).
The Houston Dash, then a brand-new franchise, made Watt the second overall pick in the 2014 NWSL College Draft. Dash head coach Randy Waldrum had this to say about her draught pick: “Things worked out better than I could have hoped. The Dash had a fantastic day. The first step was selecting Kealia Ohai, one of the top forwards in the country. She is quick, athletic, and capable of greatly extending the limits of any defence she faces.” Midway through the 2016 season, she scored 11 goals in 10 games and was named the team captain. For both Week 15 and Week 17, Watt was honoured as the NWSL’s top player. At the end of the season, she and Lynn Williams were tied for the golden boot, but Williams won because she had more assists. During the 2016 season, Watt was recognised by her peers as deserving of a spot in the Best XI.
Watt only managed to score twice in 10 games for the 2017 season before suffering an ACL tear on June 24 against the Orlando Pride. She would be out for the rest of the 2017 campaign because of this injury. Watt played again on April 22, 2018, against the Orlando Pride. She scored five goals in 2018 while playing in 19 games. Since joining the U.S. youth national programmes at the age of 13, Watt has played for every level from U-15 through U-23. She helped lead the United States under-20 women’s national team to victory over Germany in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final with a game-winning goal in the 44th minute.
Watt first played for her country at the senior level on October 23, 2016, in a friendly match against Switzerland in Minneapolis. She made her USWNT debut in the 81st minute and scored 48 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute, a new record. Even though she was called up for the first time since suffering a knee injury in 2017 and sent to the team’s training camp in July 2018, she was ultimately left off the roster for the 2018 Tournament of Nations.
Personal Life
Watt’s right eye has been declared legally blind. Her brother-in-law, Brian Cushing, was a star defensive end for the Houston Texans of the National Football League. Watt revealed her relationship with NFL defensive end J. J. Watt, then of the Houston Texans and now of the Arizona Cardinals, in October 2016. In May 2019, they announced their engagement. Watt started going by her new surname after the couple tied the knot in the Bahamas on February 15, 2020.
