He was born in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood on July 27, 1975. His parents, Victor and Lourdes, came from the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States in the 1980s. In February of 1994, Rodriguez arrived at spring training for the first time in his professional career. On July 8, 1994, he made his professional debut as a starting shortstop. In baseball history, Alex was only the third 18-year-old shortstop.
